The pharmacology of cough.

چکیده
Cough is an indispensable defensive reflex. Although generally beneficial, cough is also a common symptom of diseases such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and lung cancer. Cough remains a major unmet medical need and, although the centrally acting opioids have remained the antitussive drug of choice for decades, such opioids possess many unwanted side-effects. However, new research into the behaviour of airway sensory nerves has provided greater insight into the mechanisms of cough and new avenues for the discovery of novel non-opioid antitussive drugs. In this article, the pathophysiological mechanisms of cough and the implications of this research for the development of novel antitussive drugs will be discussed. A poster depicting the pharmacology of cough is available online and in print as to this article.

A method of inducing and recording cough and examination of the action of some drugs with this method.
pathological physiology and pharmacology of cough can be obtained by reading Bucher's article (1). The methods hitherto used for inducing cough are chemical stimulation (2-5), electrical stimulation (6-8) or mechanical stimulation (9, 10). The present authors have devised a new method for recording artificial cough induced by electrical stimulation of a dog's tracheal mucosa, and the effects of...
متن کاملCough sensors. I. Physiological and pharmacological properties of the afferent nerves regulating cough.
The afferent nerves regulating cough have been reasonably well defined. The selective effects of general anesthesia on C-fiber-dependent cough and the opposing effects of C-fiber subtypes in cough have led to some uncertainty about their regulation of this defensive reflex. But a role for C-fibers in cough seems almost certain, given the unique pharmacological properties of these unmyelinated v...
متن کاملSummary of papers presented at the 2012 seventh international cough symposium
Twenty six papers were presented as posters in the Seventh International Symposium on Cough; 12 papers were presented in the Basic Science of Cough session, and 14 papers presented in the Clinical Science of Cough session. These papers explored a wide spectrum of cough-related areas including pathophysiological mechanisms, treatment and detection of cough, and symptom assessment and perception,...
متن کاملDoes the established cause of chronic cough depend on diagnostic approach?
The objective of the present study was to evaluate the prevalence of chronic cough causes and to compare the efficacy of two diagnostic approaches used in ambulatory vs. hospitalized setting. Eighty patients with chronic cough, 40 in each group, were enrolled into the study. The etiology of cough was determined on medical history and on either basic (in out-patients) or detailed (in in-patients...
متن کاملWavelet analysis of voluntary cough sound in patients with respiratory diseases.
Changes in the characteristics of the cough sound may refer to some specific pathological processes and their evolution. In this pilot study we analyzed voluntary cough sound properties in subjects with asthma bronchiale (AB) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and discriminated them from the control cough sound in healthy subjects. The wavelet transform was used due to a nonstatio...
